Individual Coaching and Counseling

Choosing what's right for you

Professional Development

What do you want to achieve in your professional life? What are the deepest values you hold to be true? Alignment with our values creates resistance to burnout and stress. Coaching can help identify your values and set you on a course toward achieving greater harmony in your professional life.

Personal Growth

Who do you want to become? What kind of stories do you want others to tell about you? Most of the time we’re imperfect people doing the best we can. However, we know we could be or become more. Coaching can help you engage your questions and build a path forward.

Mental Fitness

Sages and saboteurs. We’ve all got them. They’re the internal voices that can invite us to greater wisdom or convince us we’re not good enough. Being mentally fit allows us to acknowledge these parts of ourselves and choose the next best step forward.

Goal Setting

Coaching can be a lot of things. Often it centers on achieving particular personal or professional goals. In coaching we spend time clarifying what it is you want to do and how we’ll go about making it happen

Coaching is a professional relationship meant to help you move from what is now to what is next.

As your coach I will:

Help you clarify your goals

This means we spend time talking about who you want to become. Coaching helps you take stock of your current situation, then look for or develop the strengths and awareness to invite change. Often, you’ll leave a coaching session with homework, a plan, or a sense of what to do next.

Help you name meaningful change

Once we begin experimenting, naming the changes you see and the challenges you face and overcome are important. Being able to mark moments of success with celebration matters.

Pay attention to integrated change.

Coaching isn’t just about tactical awareness, goals, and plans. When we make efforts to change, it impacts who we are, not just what we do. Integrating these changes into our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lives helps solidify them over time.

Promise to ask hard questions

There’s no point in beating around the bush. You initiated the conversation because you wanted something different. With compassion and empathy I will ask the hard questions we often avoid.

What if I need counseling?

Counseling differs from coaching in that we spend more time on your past. This includes experiences of pain, trauma, or grief, as well as other significant events that have shaped your identity over time. Counseling or therapy is about grappling with the influence these stories have on you in the present and deciding how they will continue to live with you.

What can I expect from counseling/therapy?

Whether you choose to work with me or not, expect a therapist to be compassionate and empathic. Expect to find someone who listens to you and helps you sort through the stories and experiences you bring with you.

Do I have to have a mental illness or trauma to go to therapy?

In short, no. I’m not sure where this assumption came from. Therapy is about change. It is about finding yourself stuck with a story or experience that impacts how you move through the world. Going to therapy means that you are ready for something new but there is a barrier in way to change.

What's the difference between therapy and coaching?

Therapy is going to focus on the barriers to change. Together, we look at the stories that keep you from being you. We wonder about their genesis, their impact, and their ongoing life. Once we have that down, then you decide what you are going to do with them. The point of therapy is to help remove the barriers.

In coaching, I’m not paying attention to the barriers. I want to know what you want to achieve and help you get there. My assumption in coaching is that if there are barriers, you have a therapist to help you deal with them.

Can I use my insurance?

No. I do not take insurance. I use a sliding scale that is the same for coaching and therapy. If you are coming for counseling, then I am happy to provide you with a superbill that you can give to your insurance company. They may or may not reimburse you for some of the expenses. Coaching is not covered under insurance at this time.

My Personal Approach

Empathic curiosity undergirds my work. I strive to be compassionate as a therapist, understanding the courage it takes to share difficult stories. I’m also curious about how those stories came to dominate the landscape of your life. Therapy is not easy, it can be downright scary at times. My goal is go with you where you need to go and make sure you have a way back.

Similarly, as a coach I maintain that empathic and curious stance. However, the kind of change we are seeking is different. There is a different energy in coaching as we spend most of our time focused on possibility and how to move forward. This doesn’t mean we move haphazardly or without compassion. It means that I’m here to follow your lead in clarifying next steps and holding you accountable for engaging them.
